Cavapoo Coat Types: A Guide to Understanding Your Furry Friend's Fur
We often tell you that a puppy will have a straight coat, a wavy coat or a curly coat when they grow up. But what does that mean? These terms refer to the different hair texture possibilities. With a variety of coat types and colors, Cavapoos are sure to capture your heart with their unique and beautiful fur.
Understanding Cavapoo Coat Types
Cavapoos can inherit a range of coat types from their parent breeds, resulting in a diverse array of looks among individual dogs. While each Cavapoo is unique, there are three primary coat types commonly found in the breed:
Curly Coat: Cavapoos with curly coats inherit their Poodle parent's curly or tightly curled fur. Curly-coated Cavapoos require regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling, as their fur can easily become tangled if not properly cared for. The curly coat is typically recognizable in puppies by 8 weeks of age and is most identifiable feature at this early age is the curly face. Curly coated Cavapoos have tight curls all over their body, including their face. It is difficult to keep this type of coat long due to the need for very dilligent brushing to prevent matting and knots.

Wavy Coat: The most common Cavapoo Coat is the wavy coat. Wavy-coated Cavapoos have a softer, looser curl to their fur, resembling waves rather than tight curls. Although it may require slightly less grooming than a curly coat, wavy-coated Cavapoos do still need regular brushing to keep their fur looking its best. While these coats may develop curls as the dogs mature, they are most easily recognizable in puppies by their gentle waves all over the body, except for the face, which should be fluffy but straight, particularly around the muzzle.

Straight Coat: Straight coats are by far the most rare coat type found in Cavapoos. Careful genetic matching can result in dogs that have straight hair but still have doodle traits and are minimally/non-shedding. Their coats will still be fluffy and may appear to have a very subtle wave to them, but their hair is definitively straight. Although they are far less prone to matting and knots regular brushing is still required for straight coat cavapoos, particularly on their ears and tails.

Caring for Your Cavapoo's Coat
Regardless of coat type, all Cavapoos benefit from regular grooming to keep their fur looking its best and maintain their overall health. Here are some tips for caring for your Cavapoo's coat:
Brushing: Regular brushing helps remove loose hair, prevents matting and tangling, and distributes natural oils throughout the coat. Aim to brush your Cavapoo's coat at least a few times a week, using a slicker brush or comb designed for their specific coat type.
Bathing: Bathe your Cavapoo as needed, using a mild dog shampoo formulated for their coat type. Avoid over-bathing, as it can strip the coat of its natural oils and lead to dryness and irritation.
Trimming: Your Cavapoo will require periodic trimming to maintain their coat length and appearance. Their faces will typically need to be trimmed monthly and bodies will need a full trim every couple months. You may elect to take your puppy to a professional groomer or with the help of online help videos you can take on the task at home.
